Department of Mathematics (DMM)

Features
The Department of Mathematics and Science Education was founded in 1987.  In 2000, the two groups, mathematics and science, were divided into separate departments.  In 2004, the Department of Mathematics Education has transformed into the Department of Mathematics (DMM) nowadays.  In 2008, the DMM plans to rename as the Department of Applied Mathematics and recruit MA students.  The department also plans to offer doctoral program in the near future, in order to provide a better studying environment that cultivates students the capacities for future employment or research.

Aims
The DMM aims to cultivate proficient mathematics teachers with both science and humanity literacy.  The professional courses allow students to have in-depth mathematic knowledge and to become mathematic professionals.  In the future, the department will maintain the fundamental characteristics on the basis of theoretical mathematic training, leading students to related fields like Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, and Computer Software Programming.

Issues
The DMM is engaged in the following issues,
Encouraging students to participate activities like Subject Test, English Language Test, Cross-university Course Selection, and International Course Selection
Encouraging faculty to participate academic activities, researches, projects and paper presentation
Encouraging students to provide community service, such as Mathematics Camp or After-school Instruction Program
Cultivating students’ global view in joining international activities
Encouraging students to take a minor as secondary profession and to apply for related graduate institutes
Providing an access to further education, mathematic symposium, and teaching demonstration for in-service teachers in Taitung
Providing a platform to download mathematics teaching materials

Courses
The three main axes are analysis, algebra, and application courses.
The analysis courses: Calculus, Advanced Calculus, Differential Equations, Complex Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Regression Analysis, and Topics in Analysis
The algebra courses: Number Theory, Fundamental of Mathematics, Set Theory, Linear Algebra, and Algebra Topics in Algebra
The application courses: Basic Computer Concept, Computer Programming, Probability Theory, Applied Mathematics, Internet Practice, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics, Data Structure, and Algorithm

Vision
The Department plans to rename as the Department of Applied Mathematics and recruit MA students in 2008.  Besides cultivating mathematic elementary school teachers, the department will make students approached to other alternatives, such as Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, and Computer Software Programming.

Commitment
To meet the call of future tendency, the DMM adds the cultivation of mathematics secondary school teachers into the curriculum.  However, educational training courses play minor part in the curriculum.  The major part lies in the courses that cultivate mathematic professions, and in accordance with general educational courses, the graduates are qualified in all levels of educational administrations.
